Most people consider their dog as a family member. You certainly wouldn’t want to have any of your family living under your roof unless they knew the family rules and your pet is no different.

Of course we all know how cute a new puppy can be but picture that puppy at its full adult size and many owner will tell you that you need to start training at a puppy age. Starting at a young age means no un-doing of bad habits this is a huge benefit, plus a new puppy is much more open to learning.

The trick to begin with is to not teach your new puppy any bad lessons. This can happen in such harmless forms such as wanting your pet to jump on a couch to watch tv with you but not wanting him on the couch by themselves.

By not correcting a dog’s behavior to jump on you it is impossible for a dog to understand that he can’t jump up on other people as well. It is important to keep things simple and rules firm so the pet does not become confused.

Dogs are pack animals and they love to be led and usually look at their owner as their leader. It is important that you assert yourself as the leader so the dog is able to understand who is in charge and is paying attention to the commands.

This means repeating commands till your dog understands them such as: no, stop, off, sit, stand, down, heel, come and quiet. If you can teach your dog all of these then it is fun to go beyond to more complicated commands such as fetch, jump…etc.

All dogs need repetition in order to understand commands. This means that you will need to do 30 minute sessions, or more, daily until your pet understands.

Better yet most owners repeat the commands throughout the day such as making a pet sit to eat before getting their food or having a pet learn to stay down while greeting guests at the door….etc.

The joys of having a dog as a family member far outweigh the months of dog training. By making dog training fun both you and your pet will live a happy “obedient” life :).

2.Kennel Cough is another vaccination that your puppy will need. It affects the bronchi and trachea of dogs and makes them have a loud dry cough. This is not a fatal disease but it is very contagious. This can be considered an optional vaccination. If you live in an area which has a high rate of Kennel Cough you will definitely want to get this vaccination to protect your pup. Consult with your veterinarian they will be able to tell you if the rate in your area is high.

3.The vaccination for Leptospirosis if given through out your dogs life and is usually given in combination with other vaccines. This is not a very common disease and larger dogs seem to be more susceptible to this disease. This disease affects the liver and kidneys of dogs.

4.The Parvovirus vaccination is recommended for most all dogs. This is a very serious disease and can cause serious vomiting, dehydration and bloody diarrhea. This virus affects the white blood cells in dogs and can harm their immune system. It has been found that some breeds of dogs are more susceptible to Parvovirus than others. Doberman Pinscher’s and Rottweilers are two of the most common breeds that seem to be affected by this disease.

5.RABBIES DOGS VACCINATION: it helps in stimulating the immune system. If your dog has been affected by this then he is cured by this vaccination and the antibiotics are filled inside him to help him fight against this disease.

There are many ways to administer medicine you might try if you have difficulty giving your dog their daily vitamin or medicine. The first method is to go to your dog and give him a tasty treat without a pill. It should be something strong tasting such as peanut butter or soft cheese on a dog biscuit. Then quickly give him the pill smothered in the same tasty thing. This helps to get a good flavor in their mouth first and then hopefully they will be excited and just eat the whole thing. The next method is for the more tricky pooches; the ones who hide the pill in their mouth until you are busy with other activities and then just spit it out on the floor. This strategy unfortunately is a little more hands on but with your soothing voice and soft hand you can make the experience a decent one. Make sure to always go to your dog first. Never call their name. They may associate that with pill time and become afraid. First have your dog sit (reassure him) then carefully take one hand and open their mouth. With the other hand place the pill as far back in the throat as possible keeping the head tilted up. Gently stroke their throat as this will cause a swallowing response. Then quickly praise your dog with verbal praise and maybe his most favorite yummy treat after they swallow the pill. This will create a positive experience for your dog and hopefully they will think about the tasty treat next time.

The real truth is that our dogs don’t live nearly as long as we do. So as dog lovers we try to make their lives as enjoyable as we can. Not only is it miserable to have to take a unhealthy dog to the vet for a vet bill, it is not fun to see your dog sick. So by bringing positive association into the pill taking process, you should be able to administer any pills that they might need to take in the future. We love our dogs and always try to do what is best for them. After all, if we take care of our best friends right they will be healthy and strong and live a long life.
